Commuting by Bike: Area Residents Saving on Gas
Four days a week, 36-year-old prison supervisor, Christy Hoisington, fills her backpack with her portable music device, a cell phone, pepper spray, an extra tire tube, an air pump and all emergency road fix-it tools for her newly acquired lightweight bicycle and pedals 11.3 miles from her home to the Bevo Unit outside of Palestine, Texas. 'It's worth it!' Hoisington said of the 50-minute ride, explaining that she now only has to fill up her gaz-guzzling Ford pick-up every 21 days. 'I started in mid-March when the gas prices went up,' she added, ' and I've saved a lot of money.'
Hoisington's bicycle purchase is part of an estimated 25% nationwide increase in bike sales compared to the same period last year. In the Texas Forest Country
which also includes Houston County, bicycle sales have seen a similar increase. 'Without looking at the actual figures, I'd estimate that we've increased our bicycle sales by about 25% compared to last year,' Debby Bartee, the toy department manager at Wal-Mart in Crockett, Texas said. Bartee also said that they have sold out of the electric bicycle which retails for over $200.

Historical Commission Launches Cemetery Revitalization Project: Volunteers Needed!
Marty Cash of the Houston County Historical Commission is heading a project to reclaim and restore the magnificient resting places of our County residents. The project is currently being formulated into organized groups to mow nearby areas of tombstones, to repair and restore the monuments to their original beauty, and to preserve them.
The Cemetery Revitalization Committee is identifying the cemeteries needing immediate attention and is also actively recruiting volunteers to help with the project. "Churches, especially those with cemeteries, are expected to provide a wonderful source of volunteerism," says Alice Jones of Crockett. Alice is the secretary of the Historical Commission and says that she is excited to see all 300-plus(and growing) cemeteries restored to their natural dignity and beauty.
The Historical Commission's first restoration project is expected to begin in September 2008. Marty and Alice say they are using the summer months to develop a volunteer team who can help with mowing, weed-eating, chain saw cutting of small trees, and basic maintenance. They add that the projects will be conducted on the week-ends and that volunteers can expect to spend 2 to 6 hours working outdoors at the cemetery. "Even if you can volunteer for an hour, you'd be so appreciated!," Alice says, adding that they hope to have home-cooked lunches served to the volunteers.
People interested in volunteering can call 936.544.3255 ext 238 and leave a message if no one is available to answer. Also, those you cannot volunteer but wish to support the project can come by and purchase a hard-bound copy of the 'Houston County Cemeteries 1837-2008' book for only $70. CD's are available at $35. There are also other historical books available for sale at the office. The Houston County Historical Commission is located on the 2nd floor of the Courthouse Annex on the square in Crockett, Texas.

Alice Jones has been fascinated with Texas and American history since she was a little girl. "It's the stories!" Alice exclaims when asked why she loves history so. "Don't bother me with the dates. Just give me the factual story," she adds. As part of her history based hobby, Alice has compiled the list and provided photographs of numerous grave markers in the Antioch Cemetery in Lovelady, Texas. There are hundreds of graves. Each has its own story.
